Guwahati, January 09 2009:
At least two persons were killed and five others were injured when suspected Ulfa militants triggered a powerful blast at Shuttle Gate area near the North East Frontier Railway (NFR) headquarters in Maligaon area of Guwahati.
The blast occurred at around 6.25 pm and two persons died on the spot and five other civilians were injured, police said while adding that the bomb was planted on a cycle which was parked between two parked vehicles.
DIG (Central Western Range) GP Singh who visited the spot immediately said, "Preliminary investigation indicated it to be an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), which was planted on the cycle.
We also suspect the hands of Ulfa behind the incident" .
Police however said that only one person died and nine others were injured.
Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Friday strongly condemned the bomb blast at Maligaon and said that the blast engineered by extremist elements is a heinous act committed on innocent people.
"It is a cowardly act that needs to be highly condemned by one and all," he said.
Gogoi said the Government would leave no stone unturned to nab those behind the blast.
This is the third time in the last few months that bomb blast has rocked the capital of Assam.
In the first instance over 80 people were killed while 200 were injured in a serial blasts that rocked Guwahati.
Another blast occured a few days back.
