Imphal, February 28:
Even though article 366 clause 25 of the Indian constitution has clearly defined that no income tax would be deducted from the salaries of Schedule tribe employees working under any State Govt or the Central Govt, the schedule tribe employees working under the Manipur State Govt have a different story to tell as income tax is being regularly deducted from their salaries by the DDO, informed a well placed source.
Surprisingly, the income tax deducted from the employees have also failed to reach the State Revenue Dept.
It may be noted here that section 10 of the Income Tax Act 1961 had clearly stated that Schedule tribe employees of Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, Assam and Ladhak region shall be exempted from income tax.
Sources further said that the matter regarding illegal taxation of the Schedule tribe employees working under the State Govt has also reached the Chief Minister level and efforts are on to probe the matter.
