Imphal, February 28:
Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong (TKS), Ukhrul has threatened to launch an agitation if the Government does not accept the 15-point charter of demands submitted for improvement of education system in the hills and accordingly initiate action within March.
The 15-point charter of demands of the student body include banning recruitment of teachers from valley for the hill schools, stopping the culture of substitute teachers, enacting legislation to ban transfer of teachers on personal whims, political vengeance and local teachers to other distant villages, filling up the vacant post of teachers, forced retirement of those teachers who are unfit, regular inspection of schools, communitisation of primary education, decentralisation of mid-day meals and ensure judicious distribution, transparency and accountability in the process of recruitment of teachers, providing grant for school building to all Govt primary schools in all hills among others.
In a memorandum submitted to the Education Minister on February 10, highlighting these demands, TKS had observed that non-functioning of service institutions particularly educational institutions in the hill has caused the tribals feel neglected at a time when psychological integration between the hills and valley is most crucial.
