An elderly woman was roasted alive in a major fire that broke out at Bishnupur Ward No.1 razing to ground two residential houses along with the attached outhouses and stables.
The victim has been identified as Moirangthem Mani Devi.
According to report, fire tenders from Imphal Fire Service Station were pressed into service as the personnel of Bishnupur Fire Services alone could not control the fire which broke out today.
The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.
The two houses and the attached outsheds, stables and kitchens which have been gutted belonged to Nongmaithem Ibopishak and Moirang Ibomcha Singh of Bishnupur Ward No..1Except for a double-storeyed granary built of bricks, all the properties have been reportedly destroyed beyond redemption.
The fire also burnt alive 97-year old ailing Moirangthem Mani Devi, mother-in-law of Nongmaithem Ibopishak, who was lying on the bed when the fire engulfed the entire house.
The joint efforts put up by the Fire Service personnel and the local people managed to control the leaping flame from spreading to the other neighbouring houses.
50 hurt in bus mishap : Seventeen commuters of a passenger bus have been admitted to RIMS Hospital after the vehicle they were travelling in met with an accident at Khwairakpan of Bishnupur district at around 9.40 am today.
In all about 50 people suffered injuries in the mishap.
Those hospitalised at RIMS include eight males and nine women passengers.
