Imphal, October 19:
Denouncing the inadequate number of lecture halls, students pursuing various medical courses at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences today staged sit-in-protest in front of the institute's administrative block.
A large number of students leaving their normal chores of study and practical assignments congregated under a makeshift cover from around 9 am till 1 pm under the aegis of RIMS Students' Union (RIMSU).
Talking to reporters at the protest site, RIMSU president Dilimpou said out of seven semesters currently in practice at the premier medical institute of the North East region there are only four lecture halls which is far below the prescribed norm of Medical council of India.
As per MCI criteria every semester should have its very own and proper lecture halls with facilities for audio visual display and gallery arrangements, explained Dilimpou.
Expressing strong resentment at the RIMS authorities in not responding positively to repeated appraisals from the Union for provision of adequate lecture halls, the RIMSU president contended that the students have no other alternative but to intensify their agitation in order to highlight the administrative flaws.
Even as the medical students are faced with lecture hall shortages the RIMS authority is ironically proposing adding another semester which Dilimpou observed inevitably necessitates provision for sufficient and efficient lecture halls.
Informing that a memorandum would be handed over to the RIMS Director highlighting problems faced by the students academically, he categorically stated that failure to provide a positive response to the demand within 14 days time would compel the Union to shut down casualty and OPD blocks as part of its programme to intensify their stir.
