Imphal, August 11 2010:
In the face of the Independence Day boycott call given by numerous banned outfits in the North East region, the State Government is leaving nothing to chance and elaborate security arrangements have been put in place at Imphal to thwarth any untoward incident or to neutralise any subversive activities planned by the underground outfits.
Apart from the civil police personnel already stationed at Imphal, Central paramilitary forces, India Reserve Battalion (IRB) and Manipur Rifles in addition to 400 new police recruits have been deployed on round the clock vigil.

The high security measures taken up ahead of the Independence day celebration comes in the backdrop of the abortive offensives at the high security Raj Bhawan (where a car bomb fitted with explosives was found not so long ago), the almost regular attacks at the official residence of the Chief Minister in the last few years, the bomb hurled at the Assembly, when it was not in session.
Though all these attacks cannot be directly linked to important dates like August 15 or January 26, these cases have set benchmarks to enhance security.
"We have intensified normal frisking, checking and have fanned out patrolling at all the strategic areas of Imphal," Senior Superintendent of police (Imphal West), L Kailun informed The Sangai Express today.
Elaborating a wee bit, the SSP said that other than the civil police stationed at Imphal West, two companies of the BSF, six companies of IRB and MR and 400 new new police recruits have been deployed on duty, said the officer.
The SSP added that the additional forces will be on security duty till the end of Independence Day celebration that falls on Sunday.
Six different underground groups of the North East, while announcing a total boycott of the Independence Day, have also called a general strike across the region on the day.
The groups include Kamtapur Liberation Organisation (KLO), Manipur People's Liberation Front (MPLF), National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB), National Liberation Front of Twipra (NLFT), Tripura Peoples' Democratic Front (TPDF) and United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA).
A number of children were killed at Dhemaji in Assam during a function on August 15, in a bomb blast by ULFA a few years back.
