Imphal, August 11 2010:
In protest against keeping Imphal Municipal Coucil in suspension for 6 months by the government of Manipur councillors are contemplating legal action against the government.
This was stated by Councillor of Ward No 27, Shamulailatpam Prahlad in a press meet.
The Councillors considered this step of the government as most inappropriate.
Instead of developing the Council the government is supporting the tainted Chairperson Meinam Ranisana and keeping the Council in suspension with an eye on the funds of the JN National Urban Renewable mission.
The Councillor said as octroi taxes are not levied, the government gave Rs 19 lakhs monthly to the Council and Rs 6.30 lakh are levied from the market per month.
But the Council spends Rs 43 to 45 lakhs monthly in paying the salaries of its employees.
The government has not given any major packages to make up the deficit.
At present employees have not been paid that salaries for 30 months.
Pensioners have not been paid for 132 months.
Instead of looking after their difficulties the Government has set its eye on the funds for developing Imphal City sanctioned through JN National Urban Renewable mission from the centre.
To meet the fund shortage the Councils proposal to levy house tax was put cold-storage by the Government.
Considering all the inappropriate action taken by the Government, the Councillors will initiate legal action against the Government in Gauhati High Court very soon.
