Maoists today triggered a land mine blast killing nine Naga jawans and injuring an equal number of security personnel in naxal-infested Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh, police said here.
"Nine jawans were killed and an equal number were injured when the Maoists triggered a land mine blast on their vehicle in Kottacheru area, over 500 km from the State capital," Dantewad police told PTI .
Naga battalion has been pressed into service by the Chhattisgarh Government here for anti-naxal operation in Bastar region and the incident took place when they were proceeding to one such combing operation, police said.
Senior officials with additional forces have been rushed to the spot, police said.
After triggering the land mine blast, the Maoists also fired on the Naga jawans and a gun battle was continuing, police sources said.
The injured jawans were evacuated by helicopters arranged from neighbouring States, the sources said.
