Imphal, June 23:
The Manipuri Sahitya Parishad has celebrated its 73rd foundation day anniversary today at Manipur Press Club with MLA Khwairakpam Loken as chief guest.
The celebration was presided by noted lyricist B Jayentakumar.
Speaking on the occasion, Elangbam Sonamani reminded that the Manipuri Sahitya Parishad was established on June 23, 1935 with development of Manipuri language and literature as primary objectives.
The main feature of today's anniversary celebration was paying of floral tributes to the departed writers of yesteryear who struggled to establish the Sahitya Parishad.
Moreover, winner of Sahitya Akademi Award 2006 Saratchand Thiyam and winner of Sahitya Akademi translation prize BS Rajkumar were also felicitated.
Saratchand Thiyam decried the alleged lackadaisical attitude of the State Government towards writers and the Sahitya Parishad.
Till date, no literary award has been instituted by the State Government even as the Manipuri literature has been to bring fame and recognition in the State, Saratchand noted.
Just as other States have literary awards, it's time for the State Government to institute a literary award for the writers of the State, he noted.
