As precautionary steps for trouble-free campaigning and voting in the Parliamentary election in Ukhrul district the district police have swung into action to stop brewing, ban selling and stop consumption of alcoholic beverages.
During such a drive conducted on March 27, a team of district police led by the SDPO and Officer in-charge of Ukhrul police station raided selected places such as Sundari Basti, New Somsai, Naphangtang, Rayotang and Phungreitang, and confiscated 169 litres of country liquor, 83 tins of alcohol brewing substances and 13 utensils.
Moreover, 14 brewers, three sellers and four drinkers were rounded up from these places by the police team who later produced the apprehendees before the Sub Divisional Magistrate and released them after slapping a penalty of Rs 500 each.
The seized items have been destroyed, said a district police source while adding that the same police team launched a similar drive the next day at Rayotang from where 90 litres of country liquor, half a tin of brewing substance and five pots were seized in addition to arresting six persons.
The latter six would be released tomorrow after initiation of appropriate legal action, the source added.
