Imphal, March 29 2009:
Vice principal of Budhachandra Academy and an assistant teacher of the same educational institution have been charged of alcohol consumption with some of the Academy's hostellers.
The vice principal Meisnam Binoy of Kongba Laishram leikai and the assistant teacher namely Thokchom Romen of Singjamei Thokchom Leikai were respectively slapped penalties of life-long ban from the teaching profession and two years restriction from rejoining service as a teacher by the student organisation - Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM).
Speaking to newspersons at its head office this afternoon, DESAM's education secretary W Thoithoi contended that M Binoy s/o (L) Biramangol and Th Romen s/o Raghumani had on March 4 indulged in drinking and merriment at the hostel along with some hostellers, including some girl students.
In addition to the teachers' involvement in the socially unacceptable behaviour, Thoithoi charged the vice principal of attempting to outrage modesty of a female hosteller on the said day.
The DESAM functionary also informed of a meeting held between management/authorities of the Academy and a Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur team during which it was agreed to totally prohibit M Binoy from returning to the teaching profession not only in the said institution but in the entire State.
Describing the teacher duo's conduct as very disturbing considering the fact that teachers are being looked upon as model and shaper of future of students, Thoithoi also conveyed the meeting's decision to suspend Th Romen from donning the role of a teacher for two years.
It is further informed that the meeting decided to hold a special session on April 1 wherein DESAM representatives and the Academy's management/administrative members would deliberate on ways to take up corrective measures so as to ensure positive development of the institution.
While appealing to all concerned to appoint male wardens to manage male hostellers and female wardens in hostels of educational and nursing institutes, he announced that DESAM would soon depute inspection teams to monitor whether the proposition is being complied or not.
Hostels found not honouring DESAM's appeal would face permanent closure, Thoithoi cautioned.
The student activist also urged parents/guardians to abandon the concept that their wards would be moulded into responsible citizens once they are enrolled to a hostel as there is strong need to remain vigilant for monitoring behaviour of the hostellers through regular contact with the hostel authorities.
