Imphal, February 25 2013:
Following the startling seizure of drugs worth about Rs 25 crore from six individuals including PIB-DW PRO Col Ajay Chowdhury by Thoubal commandos at Pallel yesterday, AMUCO and many other organisations have decided to launch a campaign to drive out all drug smugglers from the soil of Manipur.
Speaking to media persons at AMUCO office here today, leaders of AMUCO, Poirei Leimarol Apunba Meira Paibi, COHR and AMAWOVA announced this declaration.
AMUCO president KT Rahman stated that the issue would be discussed in a joint meeting with other social organisations and student bodies tomorrow.
People of Manipur have been already reeling under draconian AFSPA for the past many decades and now the Indian army has taken up drug smuggling which is deadly to human life and society.
Given the unfolding situation, it is crucial for civil society organisations and student bodies to launch a sustained mass protest movement, Rahman said.
Declaring that AMUCO together with other organisations would launch a specific campaign to root out drug smugglers and dealers from the soil of Manipur, Rahman noted that the State Government has been concealing identity of the drug dealers whose consignments were seized from Mantripukhri recently.
It is ridiculous that the owner of the drugs which were seized from Imphal airport cannot be identified till date, he remarked.
Poirei Leimarol Apunba Meira Paibi president L Memchoubi decried that the Government has not be disclosing identity of the real owners whose huge consignment of drugs were seized recently.
Observing that the recent chain of events look like some elements have been deliberately scheming to ruin youngsters of Manipur, Memchoubi underscored the need to launch a collective movement.
