Imphal, October 11 2012:
In place of the current system of delivering currency notes to branch currency chests of hill districts by helicopter, the Reserve Bank of India has asked the State Government to deliver currency notes by road with adequate security escorts.
A source informed that the 14th meeting of the State level security committee which is headed by the Principal Secretary (Home) was held yesterday.
RBI's instruction to deliver currency notes to hill districts by-road instead of helicopter was deliberated during the meeting which was also attended by RBI officials.
The meeting reviewed the security arrangements of branch currency chests located in hill districts.
Crime committed against bank and circulation of fake currency notes in Manipur were other agenda of the meeting.
At present, RBI is spending substantial amount of money in hiring helicopters for delivering currency notes to branch currency chests in hill districts.
At times, currency notes could not be delivered at the desired time due to un-availability of helicopter.
