General strike called on October 17

Imphal, October 11 2012:
In protest against refusal of the state government to grant an appointment with Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh and Home Minister Gaikhangam, the JAC against the unnatural death of Amom Rajen Singh of Kumbi Terakhong, Bishnupur District has called a 24-hour general strike in the state with effect from 5 am of October 17 .
Earlier, the JAC had submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister and the Home Minister on 5 October 2012.The JAC expected that the Chief Minister and the Home Minister would grant an appointment to discuss the issue within five days from submission of the memorandum.
However, the government did not respond to the plea, leave alone any assurance for meeting the demand.
In a statement, General Secretary of the JAC A Jiten Singh said that as such there is no choice left for the JAC but to call a general strike with effect from 5 am of October 17 to 5 am of October 18 .
Appealing to the public for support, the JAC informed that academic institutions, religious rituals and essential services would be exempted from the purview of the general strike, and the government should be held responsible for any eventuality.
It may be recalled here that Amom Rajen Singh (46), who worked as a teacher in a private school at Chattisgarh was found dead near Howrah Railway Station, West Bengal on October 2 .
