Imphal, October 31 2010:
Australian origin Emus being reared by the Foundation for Environment and Economic Development Services (FEDAS) have started laying eggs since October 9 .
FEDAS is a host institute of KVK (Krishi Vigyan Kendra) Sylvan, Henbung.
This is a remarkable achievement for FEDAS as the Emu farm at Henbung is the only one in the entire North East region.
The foundation is planning to propagate Emu farms by producing chicks at the Henbung farm.
FEDAS programme co-ordinator Dr N Muhindro said that Emu population in India has reached around 10,000.At present, there are 32 male Emus and 39 female Emus at the Henbung farm.

Hatchery machines for Emu chicks would be procured within November, Dr Muhindro said.
Already, 100 farmers have been given training on Emu rearing so that they can successfully rear Emu chicks hatched at the Henbung farm.
Generally, a matured Emu lays 20 to 30 eggs in a year.
As they usually lay eggs only in cold season, Emus being reared in the farm are expected to lay eggs from November to February, Dr Muhindro said.
