Imphal, October 31 2010:
To popularise the new name of Irabot Road covering Keishampat junction to Hiyangthang bridge, a campaign would be launched soon.
Speaking to media persons at Hotel Imphal yesterday, general secretary of the Jananeta Hijam Irabot Memorial Charitable Trust Khoisnam Japan Meetei, quoting the State gazettee notification of 2002-03, said that the Government gave its consent to rename the said road section as Irabot Road.
However, with the Government doing very little to popularise the new name, the general public has no knowledge about the new name and are unfamiliar with it.
Under such circumstances, the trust decided to take the onus of popularising the new name through an awareness campaign, Japan said.
As a part of the campaign, all the sign-boards and hoardings put up between Keishampat junction and Hiyangthang bridge would be painted with the words "Irabot Road".
He also appealed to the people to use "Irabot Road" in mails sent from and addressed to people residing along the road section.
The general secretary said that the trust is planning to develop a riverine park at Pishumthong where a statue of Hijam Irabot has been already installed.
For this, the trust is trying to find out from the PWD and IFCD if any projects have been sanctioned at the area.
Moreover, the trust would organise an international seminar on the life of Irabot and his activities in the last week of December this year.
Though the exact date and venue has not been finalised, the seminar may be held either at Tripura or Imphal, Japan conveyed.
State level and national level seminars on similar topics have been organised earlier.
After the proposed international seminar, a book would be published based on ideas, findings and comments collected from the seminars.
A meeting of the trust held today deliberated on these programmes and constituted committees to see that the proposed programmes are organised successfully.
