Linux Manipur organised Free and Open Source Software (FOSS 2009), an IT talent search competition at Don Bosco School, Chingmeirong today.
Speaking on the occasion, organiser of the event, Shijagurumayum Deepak Sharma said that Linux Manipur is a non-profit virtual organisation, whose primary aim is to create and spread awareness for Linux or Free and Open Source Software in the State and the North East.
The group guides students and computer users, and also shares domain and technical knowledge with skilled computer professionals around the globe through internet.
Deepak further said that FOSS 2009 was organised to spread awareness about Free and Open Software Source in the State.
He added that it was also to tap and develop young IT talents.
Deepak expressed hope that the event would guide the interested youths to accessible and affordable IT solutions.
Speaking about Linux, Deepak said, it is a bunch of programmes, like Windows that is needed to run a computer.
But unlike Windows, Deepak added, Linux was virtually developed by an informal, worldwide network of unpaid but highly skilled and motivated volunteers who communicate through internet.
Yaonam Sanjit Singh of NIT, Calicut, Thokchom Wangam of Herbert School, Napolean M of St Joseph School got first prizes in open, senior and junior written IT competitions respectively.
Computer Science Department of Manipur University and e-pao.net were the sponsors of the event.
HOD of Manipur University Computer Science Department, O Imocha Singh said, "FOSS 2009 is the output of a great teamwork.
The event should not be viewed as the promotion of hacking rather it should be taken as sharing and upgrading of our existing system" .
A participant, Kh Kristine of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Lamphel said, " I had no awareness of Linux before.
The speech was helpful.
We enjoyed the quiz and got new knowledge.
We want it to happen next year too" .
