Imphal, July 05 2009:
To exert pressure on the state Government to release four student activists detained in jail in connection with the killing of Prof Md Islamuddin, the Joint All Manipur College Students' Union (JAMCSU) has threatened to launch intense form of agitation even as protest demonstrations on the issue continue unabated.
Speaking to reporters at Manipur Press Club today, JAMCSU vice president Mangi Longjam said all academic activities including administrative blocks of colleges would be stopped from functioning tomorrow which would be followed by more similar agitations.

The Government should own responsibility or any untoward incident arising out of the situation, he warned.
Joining the media briefing, Union's president Naokhomba Naorem described as unfortunate the continuous detention of the four student activists even though the banned KYKL had claimed responsibility for shooting the MU proctor inside the varsity campus.
He also claimed that the Government action is affecting normal academic activities in the State with the student community forced to endure severe inconveniences.
Chipping in, JAMCSU general secretary Elangbam Bishwanath observed that detention of the student leaders is akin to pushing them closer to banned outfits.
Moreover, inspite of the fact that some State security personnel were actually involved in the assassination of the Professor, accusing/targeting student activities in connection with the murder is inviting reciprocal action from the student community.
The JAMCSU is a conglomerate body of 11 students' union of Government as well as private colleges of the State.
Meanwhile, sit-in-protests demanding unconditional release of the four student activists were staged at different locations of Imphal East and West districts with the protestors setting on fire effigies of the Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh and DGP Y Joykumar Singh.
Displaying banners and placards to denounce the detention of the four student leaders under National Security Act, demanding their immediate release, flaying State authorities for targeting student activists and decrying crackdown on student activists as if they were members of armed groups, the protestors raised slogans and burnt the effigies.
Places where protest demonstrations were held and effigies burnt included Kongpal Khaidem Leikai, Khurai Konsam Leikai, Tera Khuraijam Leirak, Shangakpham Bazar, Yurembam Makha Leikai, as well as at Konthoujam, Kwakeithel, Keishampat and Wangkhei areas.
