Imphal, July 05 2009:
FOSS 2009, the mega IT Talent Search & Linux or Free and Open Source Software gathering organized by Linux Manipur, in association with Department of Computer Science, Manipur University (MU) concluded today with more than 300 students and teachers participating from various school across the state including a student from Arunachal Pradesh.
The day began with IT Talent Search examination in the morning.
Nine children from all nine districts of the state lighted the ceremonial lamp before the beginning of the second session.
Roger Ahongshangbam talked about Free and Open Source Software.
It was followed by encouraging speeches by O Imocha, HOD, Computer Sc.
MU, Father PX Francis, Principal of DBS, Mr..STejamani, Reader, Manipur University Computer Science Department.
Deepak Shijagurumayum talked about Linux Manipur and its vision.
Father Francis, Principal, Don Bosco School said, "It is wonderful to see so much excitement amongst the students around FOSS 2009.I believe this will go a long way in creating a benchmark in the growth of IT in the state of Manipur".
FOSS 2009 showcased and demonstrated Linux installation, conducted technical talks of Linux, video clips of interviews of the legends and pioneers of Free and Open Source software and technical quiz.
The grand event was concluded with the announcement of the result of the IT talent hunt and the quiz.
O Imocha, HOD, Computer Science, Manipur University said, "FOSS 2009 is the output of great teamwork.
The event shouldn't be viewed as the promotion of hacking rather it should be taken as sharing and upgrading of our existing system".
Students from Bishnupur, Imphal East, Imphal West, Senapati, Tamenglong, Thoubal, Ukhrul, Chandel and Churchandpur participated in the event.
K Hemabati of Moirang and Heman Kavita of Ningthoukhong said "We aspire to become software engineers and came to give the test.
We did not expect the seminars/talks would be there, but we are so happy to attend the seminars from which we learn lots.
The questions aren't tough and aren't easy too, it's moderate.
We want this event to take place every year".

Kristine of Kendra Vidyalaya, Lamphel said, "I had no awareness of Linux before.
The speech was helpful.
We enjoyed the quiz and got new knowledge.
We want it to happen next year too".
FOSS 2009 was supported by DSIT Directorate of Science and Technology, Manipur, Computer Gallery, E-Pao.net, Don Bosco School, AITECT, ITCTC, Nidhi Enterprises, Basco Enterprises, Narayan Coaching Center, AP Sound System, Digital Electronics Center and various other individuals and volunteers.
