Personnel of Imphal West Narcotics Cell seized 1500 bottles of Montocup, a cough syrup containing Codein which had been banned by the Government of India, from North AOC at around 10 am today.
According to information given by the officials of the Narcotic Cell, the total monetary value of the seizure would be around Rs 60,000.The consignment had been sent from Guwahati for Kangla Pharma Agency at MG Avenue, Imphal.
The proprietor of the agency is identified as Lourembam Nandakishore (42) s/o L Dijen of Khongman Zone-II.
The seizure was made while the consignment was being unloaded from a bus at North AOC this morning.
There were in all 30 carton boxes containing 1500 bottles of 100 ml.
The cost of one Montocup bottle without the local taxes is informed to be Rs 48.50.The cough syrup is manufactured by Parna-X Laboratory Private Limited-121 Industrial Estate, Silvessa and marketed by Shreya Life Science Private Limited, Mumbai.
During the interrogation, the proprietor of Kangla Pharma Agency L Nandakishore reportedly denied having ordered the said cough syrups claiming that the consignments have been simply sent without his knowledge.
However, the Narcotics Cell personnel are not convinced that the banned pharmaceutical product should be delivered just like that and subjecting the proprietor to further questioning.
It may be noted here that the State Health Department had issued an order on August 23, 1989 banning sale of all the cough syrup containing Codein.
However, for emergency cases, a stockist can keep not more than 500 bottles and 20 bottles by a retailer.
