Conducting a drive against sale and use of plastic bags, a team of Manipur Pollution Control Board (MPCB) led by Senior EE N Minaketan Singh has seized a large quantity of plastic bag from the shops located along the Namphalong market near Gate no II of Moreh town today.
The MPCB officials also advised the shop-keepers to stop selling or using plastic bags which are harmful to the environment during the drive which was carried out with the assistance of Moreh police personnel.
It may be noted here that a person could be fined or even imprisoned under Section (21) of Environment Protection Act, if he/she is found guilty of using products which could pollute or degrade the environment.
Taking to mediaperson after the drive, Minaketan said MPCB has been carried out such drives in different parts of the States since last year.
Pointing out that most of plastic bags which were confiscated during the drive today were brought in from Myanmar, Minaketan observed that there is the need to spread awareness among the people of the border town on the harmful aspects of using plastic bags.
Officer in-charge of Moreh Police Station Y Chandramani, who took part in the drive, said that Moreh police has been contributing their mite in dissuading the people from using plastics.
