Imphal, February 02 2009:
To protest the monetary demands served on the shops located along Lamlong Keithel by the proscribed KYKL, all shops remained shut for the day today while a protest rally was also staged by the shopkeepers.
Interacting with media persons, the shopkeepers said that some youths who identified themselves as cadres of the proscribed KYKL came to them on January 21 and demanded Rs 25,000 from each shop.
|
However some other individuals who identified themselves as KYKL cadres came to the residence of some shopkeepers and told them that the demand was not served by the KYKL.
The shopkeepers said that they were instructed to cough up the money by February 1 and added that the amount was whittled down to Rs 10,000 per shop.
Since the shopkeepers are not in the position to cough up the amount, they have decided to close their shops today and tomorrow, as well said the shopkeepers.
However vegetable sellers as well as those who hawk their produce by the roadside can continue with their business as usual.
The rally was staged to highlight the plight of the shopkeepers to the Government as well as the public.
