Addressing the gathering, Minister Jayentakumar said, there has been a trend of the government schools dying gradually during the last 20 years or so, and the private schools have been becoming more popular.
A lot of people did not like to send their wards to the government schools, as such the number of students in the government schools has dropped to only few, the Minister said.
The situation had become so bad that at certain schools, the number of teachers was higher than the students, he said.
Jayentakumar further said that since the day he became the Education Minister, reviving the government schools has been his dream.
"Today, I feel somewhat happy to think that a part of my dream has been realised with the opening of a government special category English School at Keishamthong High School," Jayentakumar said.
He revealed that when the matter of developing model schools at the government schools was placed before the cabinet for discussion, most of the cabinet ministers also expressed their desire for having model schools in their respective assembly constituencies.
However, since it would be very difficult to keep model schools in every constituency in the initial stage, the government is trying to keep one model school in each of the nine districts.
The role of teachers in making the model school being set up on an experimental basis is enormus indeed, he said and appealed to teachers to work sincerely with dedication.
More than 700 students including many from reputed private schools joined the entrance test for admission to the model school, Jayentakumar said, adding that the teachers are confident of producing students who can get positions in the next HSLC examination.
It is worth mentioning that the Keishamthong High School will have classes from VI to X, with 40 students in each class.
