THE MANIPUR State Women Commission which has been set up to the protection and upliftment of the betrayed women of the society by passing bill in the state Assembly has lost moral as many cases taken up by the commission could not get support from the state police.
The apparent neglected nature of the police has also made idle to the members of the commission, said the chairperson of the commission Dr Ch Jamini said today in a briefing to the media persons.
The government is also keeping its office only for the name sake at a far corner of the Imphal west DC complex, she added.
The commission was set up on December 12, 2006 with the main objective of dealing with the atrocities and harassment meted out to the women, the weaker section of the society and protects them under the law of the land.
The chairperson said even though the commission taken up various cases related with the violence and harassment to the women, due to lack of support from the police while investigating into the case, any culprits got freed without awarding any punishment under the law.
She also blamed the state government for not converting into works on various recommendation made by the commission from time to take up programmes aims at reduction of crime against women.
It has made joke the commission, she added.
Citing an instant of police neglected attitude, the chairperson said the commission takes up a suo-motto case on the incident of raped of a 10 year old girl by a 50 year old man based on the media report but when asked the police to investigate and submit a report, police turned down it saying that the commission is not the competent authority.
