Imphal, January 30 2009:
Like in other parts of the country, the Martyrs' Day was observed in the state too, with a state level function at Gandhi Memorial Hall where Governor, Gurbachan Jagat led the people in paying floral tributes to the bust of Mahatma Gandhi in front of the Hall located in the heart of the Imphal city.
A siren was sounded from 10.59 am till 11 am.
The government had already announced that the siren will be sounded to signal for observing two minute silence.
Another siren was again sounded from 11.02 am till 11.03 am as closing signal.
A two minute silence, vehicles along the highway running adjacent to the GM Hall and its campus came to a standstill.
Governor, Gurbachan Jagat graced the observance function as chief guest which was presided over by Chief Minister, O Ibobi.
Ministers, MLAs and top officials of the state government took part in the function.
Offering of floral tributes to the bust of Mahatma Gandhi by the dignitaries marked the observance.
