The five-day 25th North East Zone Inter-University Youth Festival "Silver Unifest-2009", hosted by Manipur University, has begun here at the Centenary Hall of the University today.
Students of 12 universities from different parts of eastern India, namely Gauhati University, Vidyasagar University, Jadavpur University, SKM University, Banaras Hindu University, Vishwa Hindu Bharati University, Ranchi University, LN Mithila University, Rabindra Bharati University, Diburgarh University, etc.
apart from students of Manipur University are taking part in the festival.
From the MU, a team of 36 students (25 male and 11 female) are taking part in the festival.
The festival will conclude on December 6 .
RK Jhaljit, Padmashree award winner, who graced the inaugural function as the chief guest, said that in the backdrop of "We are one," exchange of culture among the different communities across the country is a must.
Cultures of the people of the region are very similar despite differences.
Harmony, love and respect among the universities of the country will enable them to come up to the standard of Harvard, Cambridge and Oxford Universities, RK Jhaljit hoped.
Speaking as guest of honour, H Kanhailal, Padmashree award winner, stressed the need for holding such festivals which give chances to the students to take part in the extra curricular activities other than study and learning.
The festival will give the students a chance to expose their inborn talents, he said.
With the difference of ecological system, culture of each region is also different, but one needs to know culture of other people too.
Vice Chancellor, C Amuba presided over the function.
Pro-vice-chancellor H Nandakumar, Dean of Students' Welfare, Prof Kh Ratankumar, Registrar Prof N Lokendrajit and observer of the Association of Indian Universities, Dr Khare attended.
The festival is sponsored by the Association of Indian University, New Delhi and Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
