Nongin, the state bird of Manipur which had been feared extinct can now be seen in the state Zoological Garden, announced the Principal Chief Conservator of Forest, S Singshit today.
He expressed concern over the depletion in the number of rare birds and wild animals in the state.
Speaking as chief guest at the concluding function of the 55th Wildlife Week celebration held at Iroishemba Zoological Garden, S Singshit observed that the Nongin bird has been out of sight for many years.
It was considered extinct in the state but due to the tireless efforts of the wildlife division of the forest department, the bird has been located and a specimen is now in the Zoological Garden at Iroisemba.
He stressed on the need to take steps to preserve wild birds and animals found in the state with a concerted effort of the government authority and the people.
Without the support of the people, these rare animals and birds could not be saved, he added.
State Principal Chief Conservator of Forest stressed the need for conservation of forests to preserve wildlife and asserted that conservation of forests is closely related with the preservation of wildlife.
Without taking up afforestation, it will not be possible to save wildlife in their natural habitat in the forests.
He appealed to the people to extend co-operation to the state forest department in its efforts to replenish forest stock and in preserving wildlife.
The additional chief conservator of forests (wildlife)-cum-chief wildlife warden A Kharshi-ing presided the function in which conservator of forest and wildlife Anilkumar attended as guest of honour.
On the occasion, prizes of the photo competition held during the week long celebration were also distributed.
