Imphal, March 27 2011:
The Battle of Shangshak was one of those actions that turned the scales of the World War against Japanese.
The Japanese had launched whole of their 31 Infantry Division against the 50 Para Bde, commanded by Brigadier Hope Thompson, at Shangshak.
The ten days delay and heavy casualties which this small force inflicted on the Japanese was critical for the saving Imphal.
The 26th Mar is celebrated as Shangshak Day being the final day of 'The Battle of Shangshak'.
To mark the occasion a wreath laying ceremony for the fallen heros was conducted by 23 Assam Rifles at the Shangshak war memorial.
The ceremony was attended by large number of people including serving officers, jawans and local people.
A wreath on behalf of Major General C A Krishnan, AVSM, IGAR (South) and Brigadier Narender Kumar, SM, Commander 10 Sector AR was laid by 2IC A K Rana, Officiating Commandant of 23 AR and Major Kaushalendra Singh, SM respectively.
Mr Y A Shishak, a veteran of the 'Battle of Shangshak' also a wreath on behalf of the villagers.
