State crowned champs in NE sports meet

Kohima, January 20: Adding yet another feather in the cap of Manipur, the State contingent emerged overall champion in the 20th North East Sports Meet held at Kohima since January 17.This is the 16th time that Manipur has emerged the over all champion since the inception of the sports meet.

Altogether 1500 sports-persons from 8 North East States including Sikkim participated in the sports meet held at the Indira Gandhi stadium at Kohima.

Manipur emerged the overall team champion bagging 40 gold medals, 26 silver medals and 24 bronze medals.

Nagaland emerged the first runners up though amid some controversy as Assam which won more points and medals was relegated to the third spot.

Assam won 26 gold, 28 silver and 19 bronze while Nagaland won 13 gold, 10 silver and 26 bronze.

Nagaland Governor Shyamlal Dutta graced the closing ceremony of the sports meet as chief guest today.

A number of MLAs and the Secretary of the Youth Affairs and Sports Dept of Nagaland were present.
