A two-day awareness campaign on 'Uses of Bamboo' has begun from today at Food Processing Training Centre at Porompat.
Sponsored by North Eastern Council (NEC), the awareness campaign is being organised by Directorate of Commerce and Industries, Manipur.
Programme Officer of INBAR/TAMBAC Durai Jayaram and Director of Commerce and Industries Dhiraj Yumnam inaugurated the campaign as chief guest and president respectively.
Assistant Director (Marketing Extension Service), Industries Department Shadev and OSD (Training) H Biren also graced the dais of the inaugural function.
Speaking at the occasion, Durai Jayaram stressed on the importance of Bamboo and said proper utilisation of the this useful natural product could improve the financial position of the people and generate lot of employment opportunities.
He said people should not worry too much over the phenomenon of Bamboo flowering.
In fact it should be taken as a boon in disguise, he added.
To prevent the rodents from attacking the crops in the field, all the Bamboos growing around field for over some half a kilometre should be fell down.
The harvested Bamboos could be kept and used various purposes for four-five years period, he noted.
Elaborating on other uses of Bamboos for economic activity, he said electricity could also be generated from Bamboo.
The electricity generated from Bamboo is also very cheap and do not cost more than Rs 50/60 per unit of power, he informed.
In his presidential address, Dhiraj Yumnam pointed that North Eastern States account for 60 percent of total Bamboo products of the country out of which 25 percent is produce in Manipur alone.
In such a situation, it is very fortunate for the people of the State that the Centre has launched the National Mission of Bamboo.
A big industry could be set in Manipur under the Mission, he hoped while appealing to all the entrepreneurs for co-operation in ensuring effective implementation of the Mission.
