The Dist and Sessions Judge, Manipur East has begun conducting the trial on the mysterious death of baby Roma.
Four year old Takhelchangbam Roma, daughter of T Tomba of Brahmapur Thangjam Leikai was found dead on May 16, 2003 under mysterious circumstances with strangulation marks on her neck.
Following a complaint lodged at the Porompat PS by Kamla Devi, mother of the deceased child, the police arrested four family members of the child.
The arrested members include Tomba, his parents T Brajalal and Sorojini and his sister in law Satyabhama.
They were booked under section 120 B (conspiracy) and 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code.
Chargesheets against the four were submitted by the police before the Chief Judicial Magistrate Imphal after which the latter chargesheeted them and the matter was submitted before the court of Dist and Sessions for trial.
Police in the chargesheet stated that there is prima facie evidence to suggest that the four entered into a conspiracy "to do away with the child to pave the way for Tomba's second marriage with another girl".
So far the Dist and Session Judge has completed recording statements in favour of the deceased child including her mother Kamla and another prosecution witness is being examined.
Suicide attempt: A 25-year old married woman set herself on fire after dousing with kerosene in a bid to commit suicide following an altercation with her husband at Uripok Bachaspati Leikai at about 10 o'clock last night.
The woman identified as Nonglepam Ongbi Ranabati Devi, wife of Nonglepam Robindro is being currently hospitalized at Female Surgical Ward of RIMS Hospital in a serious condition.
Ranabati and Robindro had been married for the last six years and have a three-year old son.
Robindro runs a CD Parlour at Kombirei Keithel, Lamphelpat and Ranabati a Pan Dukan attached to their house.
As informed by the husband, the husband-wife duo have not been on talking term for the past couple of days over some family matters.
Last night too, both of them have a bitter quarrel and in a fit of anger Ranabati poured kerosene all over herself and tried to set herself on fire.
Robindro snatched the burning candle from his wife, but an incensed Ranabati picked up another candle lighting near their bed and torched herself and the fire engulfed her body.
Robindro tried his best to put off the fire.
On hearing the commotion, a younger sister of Robindro rushed the room and on seeing her flaming sister-in-law suggested her brother to deep Ranabati inside the water tank.
Accordingly Robindro caught hold of his burning wife and both of them jumped inside the tank.
After that Ranabati was rushed to the RIMS Hospital.
From head to waist of Ranabati have been burnt.
Robindro also sustained burnt injuries on both his hands and fingers.
