Governor Dr SS Sidhu has stated that the State Government and the Imphal Municipal Council in particular should take up appropriate measures to ensure that the Imphal city is kept neat and clean.
Speaking as chief guest at the occasion of National Cleanliness Day observance function held at GM Hall here today, Dr Sidhu pointed that every year, numerous lives are lost due to outbreak of diseases.
One of the main causes for the outbreak of diseases is unhygienic and dirty surrounding, and therefore, the State Government and the Imphal Municipal Council in particular should pay special attention for removal and disposal of garbage.
The Governor further noted that the environmental condition in an around Imphal city has been deteriorating day by day and the drains are clogged with filth which caused problem during rainy season.
The National Cleanliness Day observance should not be just a symbolic observance but a wake up call up for all of us to maintain high standards of cleanliness in out homes, work place, road/streets and public places.
This is also what Mahatma Gandhi, in whose memory we are observing the day, had dreamt and wanted, he added.
He further went on to say that Gandhiji had always emphasised the need for cleanliness for healthy living as healthy people make a healthy nation.
However, the cleanliness that Gandhiji has stressed on is not only of the body but also of the premises and the surroundings is essential.
In his presidential address, Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh observed that while paying respect and homage to Gandhiji, we should also remind ourselves of the virtue of sharing, love mercy and understanding among our ourselves.
Gandhiji�s message of love and tolerance is all the more significant in this present general for removal of hatred and animosity among the mankind and among the nations of the world, he added.
At the outset of the function, Governor Dr SS Sidhu and Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh led the other VIPs and people who were present at the occasion in paying floral tributes to the statue of Mahatma Gandhi.
