Imphal, October 29 (NNN):
Concrete measures have been taken up in Tamenglong headquarters to check the avian flu or bird flu that may accompany migratory birds.
With the setting in of winter season migratory birds have started flocking into the district particularly at the Zeilat Lake and the Barak valley areas.
In order to give more teeth to the measures, an organisation christened as Tamenglong Nature Club has been floated.
Club convenor Nehemiah Panmei informed that they had taken up necessary measures.
The club had also apprised district administration following which a notification had been issued by the DC prohibiting killing and selling of birds in the district.
Nehemiah Panmei, a noted public leader in the district further informed that a bird locally known as Akhoipuina is a migratory bird which the people have been asked to be cautious of.
Nehemiah also informed that ducks and other kinds of birds are also flocked in to the Barak valley and Zeilat Lake every year during the winter seasons.
He said that these birds come from Thailand and other eastern countries.
Proving his point that birds from Europe come to Tamenglong district, the Tamenglong Nature Club convenor said that last year local people had captured a migratory bird which had a ring in its legs.
The ring was marked with Germany tag with a word Volgel-wertte Hiddensee.
