State Govt returns money meant for MU salaries

Imphal, December 27: It defies logic, but it is true.

A sum of Rs 3.84 crores which was released by the Union Planning Commission to meet the salary demands of MU after it was converted to a Central University has been returned by the State Govt to the Centre without giving a single paise to the university.

The amount was meant to cover the salaries from November this year till February next year.

Disclosing this to The Sangai Express, a well placed source said that after Parliament passed the Bill converting MU to a Central University in October this year, the Union Planning Commission released the said amount to meet the salary demands of the University from November this year till February next year.

However for reasons which have not been explained, the money has been returned to the Centre by the State Government without informing MU.

The source said that the university needs Rs 19 lakhs per month to pay the salary of its employees and added that since the money has been returned to the Centre, MU has deputed its Deputy Finance Officer N Biren to Delhi to get back the amount.

The money which was returned by the State Govt included the arrears of its employees and pensions for its retired staff.

In another similar case, out of a sum of Rs 33.3 crores which was released by the Centre for infrastructure development for MU, the State Govt released only Rs 10 crores to the university and returned the rest to Delhi, informed the source.
