Diphupar (Dimapur), July 07:
It was an emotional and nostalgic affair at the farewell function at the residence of Leader of Opposition I.Imkong here organized by the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee for Governor-designate of Goa SC Jamir when speaker after speaker recalled their association with Jamir whom the media has dubbed the Grand Old Man of Naga politics.
Former school teacher of Jamir, Yajen Aier set of the tone for Jamirs speech when he narrated the speech presented by the former at the second Naga Peoples Convention at Mokokchung in 1958.Yajen said Jamir mentioned then about the presence of three animals, namely, monkey, donkey and tiger, in man and that if these animals in man were killed humanity was not progress.
Jamir today elaborated what he had said then and how relevant it still is. He said the monkey in man represents primitiveness, the donkey represents conservatism and the tiger represents ferocity.
He said as long as these animals in man are present humanity cannot progress or live together harmoniously.
He regretted that in the present Naga society, there was an alarmingly increase in the population of tigers in men and that there was unabated increase in killings of fellow brothers.
In what he said could be his last political speech, Jamir exhorted party workers to remain steadfast in their beliefs and ideologies and that they should not be swayed away by other influences.
Those of us who have remained in the Congress party today are original Congress men and women, he said advising them to anchor their ship on solid rock.
He said if the party was to prosper, party workers should have vision and commitment.
He said that just as a nation perishes when there is no vision, political parties also perish when the workers have no vision. The Indian National Congress has survived and flourished for more than a hundred years because the party has clear vision and firm commitment to serve the people, he said and pointed out that regional political parties didnt survive for long because they didnt have long term plans and vision for the people.
All the speakers were unanimous that the departure of Jamir from the State would certainly create a vacuum which would not be possible to be filled up in a hurry.
Those who spoke on the occasion include PCC Vice President Tingyeih Konyak, former Speaker Z.
