Imphal, June 11 2009:
To solve the problem of water shortage in Imphal area, steps have been taken up to ensure dedicated power supply to 11 different water supply schemes under the Public Health Engineering Department.
According to an official source, the daily requirement of water in Imphal Municipal area is around 22.5 million gallon but only around 16 million gallon of water is being supplied currently.
So ensuring an additional supply of around 10 million gallon of water would be able to solve the recurring problem of water shortage faced by the denizens more particularly during summer season.
Keeping this in mind, steps have been taken up to ensure dedicated power supply to 11 different water supply schemes, the official source said, adding that the water supply schemes where dedicated power supply would be extended are Chinga Water Supply Scheme, Ningthempukhri Water Supply Scheme, Koirengei Water Supply Scheme, Minuthong Water Supply Scheme, Irilbung Water Supply Scheme, Kangchup Water Supply Scheme, Thumbuthong Water Supply Scheme, Moirangkhom Water Supply Scheme and Potsangbam Water Supply Scheme.
For Porompat Water Supply Scheme, it has already been conducted with dedicated power supply line and the process is underway in case of Canchipur Water Supply, the source informed.
As a consequence of the present power crisis in the State, the engines of the water supply schemes could function not more than 5 to 6 hours in a day.
So ensuring them with dedicated power line would help in generation of the engines upto 12 to 16 hours in a day.
Thus solving the problem of water shortage, the source explained.
The source further informed that of the total 10 water supply schemes under the Department, only five water tankers are in running condition.
However, discussion are already underway for increasing the number of water tankers under the Department along with earmarking necessary fund in the budget of 2009-2010 .
According to another source, measures have also been taken up for water sharing from Thoubal Dam in connection with solving the problem of water shortage in Imphal Municipal area.
