A rifleman of the Assam Rifles was killed while another was wounded when suspected Kuki militants ambushed a patrol party last night at near thonglang Atongba village, located about 20 kilometre west of Kangpokpi police station on the IT Road.
The PRO of PIB confirmed the report and added that the troops refrained from firing to avoid civilian casualties as the militants escaped through an adjoining village.
While the deceased jawan has been identified as AM Ringphami Tangkhul of Ukhrul the injured personnel whose details are being awaited is reportedly admitted at the Army Hospital in Leimakhong.
Rithphami is informed to have succumbed to injuries at around 8.50 pm, 20 minutes after the attack.
Meanwhile, body of one Leishangthem Kumar (50) of Khurai Soibam Leikai has been fished out from near Lilong bridge this morning.
Kumar is said to have disappeared about a week ago before some people saw the floating corpse in a highly decomposed state.
Search operation: About 20 persons have been detained for verification/interrogation after they were picked up by State police personnel during search operation this morning at uripok Bachaspati Leikai.
UG held: Troops of 22 Maratha light Infantry apprehended a KYKL cadre identified as Arambam Ramananda (36) of Khongkham Awang leikai in the wee hours today, said a PIB (DW) release.
