Uncared for, child dies at Jessami

A yet to be diagnosed disease has broken out at Jessami in Ukhrul district infecting a large number of people, mostly children.
The disease has already claimed the live of a 9 year old child today.
Informing this to The Sangai Express today Secretary of Jessami Village Council, M Nizote said that between 30 to 40 people have been infected by the disease till date and added that most of the sick are children.
One child has already succumbed to the disease he said and identified the victim as Kekhrolu daughter of Thutolo a Class II student of Jems School.
The child contracted the disease about two days back.
The outbreak of the disease was reported to the Chief Medical Officer of Ukhrul a week back, said the village Secretary and added that till date nothing has been forthcoming from the side of the Government.
To compound the matter, the only doctor posted at the Primary Sub-Health Centre at Jessami, Dr Merajao Kabui is being utilised at Ukhrul, said the village secretary.
There are two pharmacies at the village which lies on the border of Manipur adjoining Nagaland.
These two pharmacies have not been able to meet the medicine demands of the sick people, informed M Nizote.
The symptoms of the disease include headache, dysentery, fever and nausea, said the village Secretary and added that the matter has also been highlighted to the local MLA, A Aza.
Some of the more well off families have shifted their sick members to Ukhrul and Imphal, informed Nizote adding two have been taken to Imphal while another two were admitted to Leishiphung Hospital at Ukhrul.
When The Sangai Express contacted the Chief Medical Officer of Ukhrul, Dr K Jajo today evening, the CMO replied that the matter has been apprised to him.
He said that efforts are on to send a medical team to the border village.
The matter has be put forward to the DC of Ukhrul said the CMO and added that discussions are on to send a medical team soon.
The CMO claimed his office has not received any information about the death of the child.
Dr Jajo added that Dr Merajao Kabui who was utilised at Ukhrul has been relieved and despatched to Jessami.
On being contacted by The Sangai Express, State epidemiologist Dr Th Biren said he has not received any information with regard to the situation at Jessami.
Efforts to contact the Health Commissioner drew blank.
