The first phase of the intensified pulse polio immunization programme began here yesterday.
The state health minister, L Nandakumar launched the programme in a function held at Uripok Achom Leikai yesterday morning.
The minister said the government is committed to completely eradicate polio from the state.
During the last few years reports of polio have not surfaced in the state.
The next phase of the programme will be carried out on May 15.The programme was slightly affected due to the bandh called by the Kangleipak Communist party (KCP).
The exact details of the numbers of children vaccinated will come after two or three days from all the district headquarters.
The first phase will continue for some more days according the state health official as there are large numbers of villagers where it takes three to four days to reach by foot.
Today the supervisors searched in their areas to find out if any children were left out.
It will continue tomorrow.
Even children who are administered polio vaccine at hospital will have to be provided the vaccine.
The state family welfare officials said the programme has to be done seriously as the polio virus is still prevalent.
We can not help if anyone is affected by polio.
It can only be prevented.
About 3,50,995 children are targeted and a total of 4,08,886 houses will be reached.
