Former HAC Chairman and incumbent Chairman of Zomi Council, N Songchinkhup passed away early today after a prolonged illness at his residence in New Lamka's Dorcas Veng.
A Catholic by faith, Dominic N Songchinkhup had foregone the post of a school headmaster in 1990 to join politics and unseated the then Congress MLA from Thanlon Assembly Constituency T Phungzathang in 1995. He was elected from the same seat for three consecutive terms before losing it to the incumbent MLA V Hangkhanlian.
Survived by his wife and six children, the former Minister was, till his last breath, the working President of PDA and the official Chairman of Zomi Council though he had temporarily relinquished the post to an appointee.
Mourning the death of their leader and their incumbent Chairman, the Zomi Council, in a statement issued to the press said it was indeed a great loss for the Zomis world wide and offered their condolences to the bereaved family members.
The KSO general headquarters has also mourned the 'untimely demise' of an outstanding leader and claimed that his passing away has left a void which no one would be able to fill.
His untimely death is a big loss to the whole of the Kuki community, it said in a statement.
