With activation of Autonomous District Councils in hill areas, ADCs would be able to take up pro-active roles in bringing peace in the hill districts in addition to accelerating the pace of development, said MPCC president Gaikhangam.
Gaikhangam was speaking at the 125th birth anniversary function of Indian National Congress cum reception function organised by the Khoupum Area Congress Committee at Khoupum Gaidimjang ground on December 3 .
Among others, the function was also attended by Sadar Hills ADC Chairman Sepu Haokip, Tamenglong AFC Chairman Sohem Haomei and other ADC Members.
Gaikhangam who is the sitting MLA of Nungba Constituency claimed that the ADC elections held amidst strong opposition from certain quarters was a great achievement of the Government as local self Government can be installed in hill areas after a gap of many years.
With all the six ADCs already functioning, ADCs would be able to take proactive roles in restoring peace in hill areas in addition to expanding and accelerating development activities, Gaikhangam claimed.
Informing the gathering that development of Old Cachar Road, which was the life-line of Manipur during the period of monarchy, has been included in the Prime Minister's package, the MPCC president conveyed that NEC's detailed project report of Rs 84 crores for development of Old Cachar Road to the level of National Highway has been approved by the Planning Commission.
Talking about Congress party, Gaikhangam said that Congress is a secular party which embraces all underprivileged people without any reservation.
The function culminated with presentation of cultural programmes including dance and music.
