Thoubal Dam : Biren sets Dec 2011 deadline

Imphal, December 04 2010: Main dam of the Thoubal Multi-purpose Project would be commissioned by December 2011, declared IFCD Minister N Biren today.

Speaking to media persons during a spot assessment of the project along with top officials of IFCD today, N Biren conceded that though Thoubal Multi-Purpose Project was initiated in 1980 and different deadlines set for completion of the project, none of the deadlines could be met due to several impediments.

From 1980 to 2004, construction work of the project could make little progress.

However, the project has been making steady progress since 2005-06 .

Only about 15 per cent of the project could be completed from 1980 till 2004 .

But this changed remarkably after 2004.Between 2005-06 till date, almost 60 per cent has been completed.

As such, 75 per cent of the project has been completed so far, Biren claimed.

Main dam of the project would be completed by December next year and the same would be dedicated to the people.

He also assured to look into the shortage of diesel being encountered in the project work.

Noting that Khuga Dam has been commissioned after waiting for 28 long years, Biren remarked that this was made possible not only by SPF Government's efforts but also as a result of cooperation extended by the people of Churachandpur district.

Now the Government's attention is focused on Thoubal Multi-purpose Project and Dolaithabi project.

Saying that the Thoubal Multi-purpose Project would generate 7.5 MW of power in addition to supplying potable water to Imphal and other urban areas, the IFC Minister appealed to all not to pose any hurdles to the construction work.

He said that the Government has its door wide open to discuss any grievances.

The team led by the IFC Minister inspected earth dam, spillway and other components of the project.
