Imphal, December 07 2013 :
Though the State is prone to various animal diseases and there have been epidemic of bird flu and swine flu in the recent past, the District Veterinary Hospitals in Manipur have not been able to render commendable services to the public due to the apathy of State Government.
There are altogether nine District Veterinary Hospitals in the State.
The hospitals are located at Yourbung in Imphal East, Mekola in Imphal West, Bishnupur District Headquarters, Athokpam in Thoubal, Modikhun in Chandel, Tuibong in Churachandpur, Lukhambi Village in Tamenglong and Christian Colony in Senapati.
According to the response given by Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Minister Govindas Konthoujam to a query raised by MLA RK Anand during the State Legislative Assembly Session on June 28 this year, about 70 percent of construction works for District Veterinary Hospitals have been completed.
However, the hospitals have not been made functional till date.
The non-functional of these veterinary hospitals is a hindrance to timely vaccination and prevention of animal diseases.
There is still no adequate manpower and infrastructure in these hospitals.
Above all, the veterinary sub-centres across the State are unable to provide good veterinary health service.
The Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Department has largely failed to implement various centrally sponsored projects in the State such as enhanced milk production.
The farmers and general public have drawn the attention of the State Government towards improvement of veterinary hospitals and sub-centres in the State.
