Five cadres of different UG groups of Manipur laid down arms and surrendered to the IG AR (S) and DGP Manipur yesterday at a simple but solemn ceremony held at HQ IG AR (S) at Mantripukhri.
A press release from PRO, HQ IG AR (S) said that as the Sentinels of the North East, Assam Rifles have played a significant role in countering insurgency and bring peace and prosperity in this region.
Through relentless efforts, positive image and genuine concern for people of Manipur, 8 AR and 31 AR of 26 Sector under IGAR (S) motivated five hardcore militants to shun violence and join the main stream.
The surrendered cadres included three from the banned militant outfit KCP (MTF), No.11134 SS Pte Inaobi of Waheng Khuman (Nambol), No.11005 S/S Pte Mangkhanpao, of Behang, No.11136 SS Pte Govind of Waheng Khuman (Nambol) and two from the banned PREPAK, No.40916 S/S Pte Sunil of Kwakeithel and No 40917 SS Junior Pte Th Chittaranjan of Kwakeithel.
Out of the five surrendered cadres, three are 10+ 2 qualified and one is a graduate, who has also served as a teacher in an educational Institute in Bhopal before joining the militant outfit.
The press release further said that these misguided youth finally surrendered along with arms to DGP Y Joykumar and Maj Gen CA Krishnan, IGAR (South) at a simple surrender ceremony.
The family members and relatives of the cadres were also present on the occasion.
Arms and ammunition laid down included one AK Rifle with magazine, four pistols with magazines, 29 live rounds of AK and 15 live rounds of 9 mm ball.
The surrender of these hardcore militants through AR reinforces the faith of locals in the security forces, the press release claimed.
Speaking on the occasion, DGP Joykumar exhorted the underground youth to join the national mainstream and lauded AR's efforts in bringing normalcy in Manipur.
Maj Gen Krishnan further reiterated the commitment of AR for ushering an era of peace and prosperity in Manipur.
