Tamenglong, November 22, 2009:
Thanks to the efforts of district Veterinary department, Tamenglong, the artificial insemination of cows has been successful in Tamenglong district.
The artificial insemination has been given to around 35 cows, out which as many as some 20 cows are able to produce with Jersey-breed Cows in 2008-2009. Some milkmen in Tamenglong could ensure their survival without any major financial problem amidst the natural calamity that gripped Tamenglong district and most part of the North-East.
The district veterinary department has tried to improve the lives of the people by giving artificial insemination of cows for free of cost to those willing milkmen.
While interacting with this reporter here today, Timothy Riamei, a milkman of Chakatdai (Khangchuilon), some four kilometers from the district HQs, said that one jersey-breed cow earns income of Rs 8-12 thousands in a month.
He said, a family could be maintained easily with two milch cows.
"We don't need to purchase any manure for vegetables or purchase any vegetables from other people, instead we are selling vegetables", said Timothy.
Apart from benefiting my family, there is also scope for job to the unemployed youths in this sector.
Rearing of cows also proves more beneficial than jhum cultivation, he said.
Agreeing to Timothy Riamei's view, a milkman, Kakangam Gonmei said that rearing of milch cows provides regular milk to the family as a healthy diet.
He also asserted that the cow milk is also good for BP patient.
They also said that the district veterinary department helps them to give artificial insemination to the cows during the challenging time of drought-like situation. The department also helps in time of sickness.
However, the department has only first aid kits.
They urged the concern authority to provide more facilities.
No officer or employee of district veterinary department, Tamenglong, has been found absent for long period of time, it is learnt.
