Imphal, November 22 2009:
On the occasion of Children's Day, CRY launched its nationwide Sabko Shiksha, Samaan Shiksha campaign to invite people to sign in a charter which would be submitted to the Union Government asking for three amendments on Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act 2009 .
The current Act has several loopholes that would result in unequal access to this fundamental right for children, a CRY press release said.
By garnering public support for the charter, CRY hoped to draw Government's attention on the need for amendment of the Act.
The collected signatures will be submitted to key authorities across States, Union Ministers and the President.
The three charters are include children below six years as well as 15 to 18 years in the main provisions of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Act 2009, make sure there is a school with qualified teachers and proper facilities within 1 km of any habitation and allot 10 percent of India's GDP to education.
The provisions of the Act would be explained in 500 villages, 22 towns and cities in simple terms and make a case for amending it.
CRY will conduct signature campaign in Manipur as well.
The campaign will culminate on December 11 and the signatures collected from across the country would be handed over to the President in the form of a symbolic book.
