Imphal, November 22 2009:
Along with initiating removal of commando, police, MR and IRB personnel working under its Police Department and have been found to be involved in cases like extortion and serving demand note at the behest of underground outfits/ activities from their respective service, the State Govt would continue to monitor the activities of all its personnel.
Disclosing this to The Sangai Express, a highly placed source informed that following the instruction of Union Home Minister P Chidambaram, who in his last visit to Imphal, directed the State Govt to take necessary measures to control extortion activities and remove all those personnel who are working at the behest the UG groups, the State Govt has started taking up action after a thorough investigation.
However, the State Governor or its Police Department have not yet revealed out the matter related to the investigation or the subsequent action taken up in this regard to the public.
Nonetheless, at the instruction of the State Govt, the Police Dept has studied the antecedents of all the police personnel as well as MR and IRB personnel who are being posted in different districts of the State.
The same is true with those who have joined the service recently.
Based on the report furnished by the Police Headquarters, the Home Department has so far terminated five personnel of Commando, police, MR and IRB from their services and the process is on for terminating some more personnel.
Terminated personnel include three Commandos/Police personnel attached with Thoubal District Commandos, one Havildar attached with Imphal East and one MR/IRB personnel.
There have been cases of suspending VDF personnel for their alleged involvement in extortion activities as well.
The Police Dept has also been closely monitoring the activities of some other personnel who are suspected to have nexus with UGs.
It may be recalled that earlier, Imphal West District Police arrested one IRB personnel who allegedly lobbed a bomb at Chamber of Commerce Hospital.
