Imphal, October 04 2010:
Democratic Students Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) today lamented that no improvement in infrastructure and learning facilities in the colleges has been made till date even though Manipur University has announced the introduction of the semester system from the current academic session.
With the introduction of the semester system, MU authority has scheduled the first semester exam in December this year.
But students remain deprived of facilities which are needed to cope with the system, DESAM general secretary Angamba Moirangthem said today.
He revealed that the authorities are yet to make available books in libraries of the colleges suited to the new syllabus.
E-learning facilities which would be an alternative means for the students to study are not available in any government college.
A total of 495 posts of lecturers out of 1967 created are lying vacant.
No regular director of Education (U) has been appointed since 1986.Colleges are functioning without regular principals despite the utmost need for effective administration.
DESAM has submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister today drawing the attention of the government to look into the matter of filing up of vacant posts of lecturers, regular principals and a regular director and also to address the shortage in infrastructure and study materials as per recommendations made in a discussion on the "Issues and Challenges of Higher Education in Manipur" held in August, 2010 .
The memorandum drew the attention of the Chief Minister in early implementation of the recommendations made in the discussion, said the general secretary recalling that the discussion on the topic was held at the conference hall of the ICM, Lamphelpat on August 10 and 11 with the participation of students and teachers of various schools.
DESAM had organized the discussion in collaboration with the Coordination Committee of College Students' Unions and the discussion concentrated on three core issues, infrastructure, teaching & learning and governance.
He reiterated that the recommendation was made after a thorough deliberation on the issues and problems confronting the colleges.
If the government fails to implement the recommendations contained in the memorandum, DESAM will launch various types of agitations, he warned.
