Imphal, October 04 2010:
Observing that deforestation is like axing our own feet, MPCC president Gaikhangam has called upon all to stop felling of trees indiscriminately and join in the campaign for protection of forest resources.
Speaking as chief guest of the function held to distribute seeds of winter crops among the selected beneficiaries of Tamenglong district at the supervisors' training hall of Horticulture Department at Mantripukhri today, Gaikhangam pointed out that forest clearance and setting it on fire for cultivation is becoming outdated and the villagers should stop this harmful practice.
Instead of destroying forests, we should start paying attention to conservation and reap the benefits of natural resources.

However, he noted that in order to protect the forest from destruction and ensure food security to the people, specially those living in the hills, the Departments concerned of the Government should not only make the people aware but also provide adequate seeds to them.
Furthermore, the MPCC president pointed out that although there is enough food production in the hills, these products are lying in waste as there is no cold storage facility and other necessary technologies.
So, the Government of Manipur should ensure that there is one cold storage in each of the hill districts.
Presiding over the function organised under the aegis of District Officer (Horticulture and Soil Conservation), Tamenglong district, MLA of Tamenglong Assembly Constituency K Panmei observed that the officials of the Department should impart training on latest technologies to the farmers and help in increasing their production and financial position.
Around 150 beneficiaries selected under Technology Mission from different parts of Tamenglong district including Tamei SubDivision, Nungba Sub-Division, Tousem Sub-division and Tamenglong district headquarters attended the function.
Apart from seeds of Pea, Onion and Cabbage, bee-boxes and baskets were distributed among the beneficiaries.
