Imphal, June 20 2017:
People whose houses have been flooded following the collapse of a dam between Imphal River and Ningthibi canal a few days back have decried the Government's failure to provide necessary relief materials till date.
The dam collapsed during the recent floods following which nearby roads as well as a large number of houses located at Nungei Awang Leikai, Makha Leikai, Nungei Khunou, Chingei Ching and Chingjao were flooded.
Speaking to media persons today, Social Youth Progressive Organisation, Nungei advisor Aslam Khan said that half of the width of Ningthibi canal was filled with earth for construction of a bridge but it led to collapse of the dam during the recent floods.
As a result, water overflowing from the canal flooded a large number of houses and the affected people have been facing immense difficulties for the last 20 days.
Even as the affected families have been taking shelter in road side tents, the State Government has not bothered to even open a relief camp, Aslam Khan said.
Nonetheless, local people are considering opening a relief camp for the 50/60 families whose houses have been flooded, he informed while urging the Government authorities to provide immediate relief materials.
He also urged the Government to carry out a proper survey about the damages caused by the floods in order to give adequate compensation to the victims.
Aslam Khan further highlighted the need to hold a medical camp for the flood victims as they are now quite vulnerable to water-borne diseases.
